MSHELL™ & Network Centric Architecture

Each ACT product incorporates an advanced network-centric design and is powered by MSHELL™ -- a powerful geospatial data processing engine. The software suite and core MSHELL™ engine is a product of more than two decades of research and development. The products are designed to perform in high-volume geospatial data environments and ACT continuously enhances the software to meet new and changing mission management, operations and scientific requirements.

ACT's network-centric architecture enables the MSHELL™ engine to be engaged in the network on WIPE™/PIPE™ servers or at the client end of the network via ACT-REACT™. This design optimizes network, processor, and human resources and enables organizations to deploy components across multiple networks and processors to achieve maximum data reliability and availability.

The architecture also allows users to choose the interface that is most appropriate to the task. Multiple thin and thick client options, combined with a robust API and standards support enables organizations to provide universal access to geospatial data, and comprehensive fusion, analytic, and collaboration capabilities.

The ACT suite was designed to boost data and results reuse across the scientific community -- within a single mission or across multiple missions.   In addition to sharing the MSHELL™ core processing engine -- enabling scripts and functions to be reused across nodes -- WIPE, PIPE and ACT-REACT™ are integrated so analytic results can be automatically “published” and accessible anywhere in the network.

ACT products incorporate numerous industry standards (e.g., OGC, GDAL, WMS, WCS and many others) and the company remains very active in the geospatial standards arena so customers can continue to leverage current and future hardware, software and data collection investments.

A History of Innovation

ACT’s software success began with the creation of MSHELL™, an image processing language environment designed to organize and manage large volumes of data. The Defense Community has extensively used and continues to use MSHELL™ for reduction and analysis of satellite imagery. Building upon the success of MSHELL™, ACT developed a variety of software tools intended to assist both the government and the private sector in fast, efficient and effective processing of satellite data. ProVIEW – an interactive command line and menu driven signal-processing environment -- is one example of ACT’s innovation track record. ProVIEW allows processing of large volumes of images in a fully automatic fashion and provides powerful scientific signal visualization.

The next phase of ACT’s innovative thinking is WIPE™ – the WWW Image Processing Environment – a web-based Image Processing and Geographical Information System (IP/GIS) that provides network-centric manipulation of geo-spatial/temporal data. Through a simple to use web-based interface, WIPE offers a fully integrated hardware/software system for the assimilation, processing, and fusion of geospatial data sets. WIPE has been and continues to be actively used by NOAA, NRL/US Navy, and SACLANT Center/NATO.

ACT also developed a special version of WIPE™, called PIPE™ (Planetary Information Processing Environment) with special features to support unique space exploration requirements (e.g.. telemetry data handlers, NASA PDS Generation, etc.). PIPE™ has been and continues to be used by NASA in multiple missions such as CLEMENTINE, NEAR, MGS, IRAS, MERCURY MESSENGER and MARS MRO.

The company’s latest innovation is the development of the most comprehensive geospatial data fusion and analysis workbench available -- ACT-REACT™. Because ACT-REACT™ is fully integrated with WIPE™ and PIPE™ researchers are able to manage across the entire geospatial analytic lifecycle and gain significant data and results reuse. ACT-REACT leverages the same MSHELL™ image processing engine – enabling researchers to build and test complex scripts and leverage WIPE™/PIPE™ servers to fully automate the process. ACT-REACT™ is currently being used by NASA to support many Planetary Missions and NOAA/USN/NASA in decision support tools for Costal Zone Management.
